Dr. Koenig, a minister and longtime educator, began his career in 1955 as supervisor of music at Florence High School in Wisconsin. After serving in the Army in Korea, he became the director of instrumental music at his hometown. In 1962, his band at Chetek High School was awarded second place in the Minneapolis Aquatennial Grande Day parade. Leaving Wisconsin, he taught and directed the instrumental music program at Palo Alto Senior High School in California. Then, he transitioned, becoming an assistant to the minister at St. John's Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, CA, in 1964. Over the course of the next 30 years, Dr. Koenig continued to progress within the church, serving in California, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Pennsylvania. He served as a pastor and senior pastor at several churches and in various administrative and instructor roles for several community and four-year colleges, including the University of Minnesota. In retirement, he was the stated supply pastor for two small churches in Wisconsin between 1999 and 2009 before leading chapel services at Timber Hills Presbyterian Homes in Inver Grove Heights, MN, from 2010 to 2018.
Involved as the president of several organizations over the years, including the South St. Paul Ministerial Association and the Danville-Riverside Area Ministerial Association, Dr. Koenig has also been actively involved on various committees. He served on the Christian education committee of the Synod of the Trinity, as chair of the Christian education committee of the Presbytery of Northumberland and as a member of the Synod of Lakes and Prairies Designation Pastor Plan Cabinet (1982-1984), and as the Moderator of the Presbytery of Northern Waters (1984). He also held several roles with the College of Education and Human Development Alumni Society at the University of Minnesota. In 2010, Dr. Koenig established and funded the Koenig-Muilenburg History of Religion Seminar at San Francisco Theological Seminary. He also established and funded the Robert A. and Pauline L. Koenig Scholarship Fund at the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser School District in Wisconsin in 1998.
Dr. Koenig is a longtime member of the Burton Society of the College of Education of the University of Minnesota, the Heritage Society, the President's Club of the University of Minnesota, and Phi Delta Kappa. He also was chair of the finance committee and served on the board of directors of the North Central Career Development Center in Minneapolis. In Wisconsin, he was president of the Chippewa Valley Ecumenical Housing Association, joined the Elks Club and was appointed five times to serve as Grand Chaplain of the Wisconsin Masonic Grand Lodge.
A nominee for One of the 100 Most Distinguished Alumni of the University of Minnesota's College of Education and Human Development in 2006, Dr. Koenig was also recognized with a WCCO Good Neighbor Award in 1974. He has been included in close to 40 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Religion.
Dr. Koenig holds a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, a Master of Arts in educational administration and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Minnesota, and a Master of Divinity, magna cum laude, from San Francisco Theological Seminary. He also completed postgraduate coursework at Bennington College as a John Hay fellow and was ordained to the ministry by the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. He notably served in the U.S. Army in the Republic of Korea from 1956 to 1958.
