Having accumulated over 40 years of experience, Mr. Herrick is currently the Robert A. Hoffer distinguished professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at Purdue University, previously serving over two decades as department head and as assistant department head for which he was a professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at Purdue University. Prior to these appointments, he was an associate professor at Purdue University from 1989 to 1992. Mr. Herrick held the post of the chairman of the engineering technology department at the University of Toledo from 1986 to 1989, having progressed from his previous position as the head of the electrical engineering technology program from 1980 to 1986. He served as a senior member of the technical staff at IT&T Advanced International Development Center for Electronic Switching Systems from 1988 to 1989. His career began as a member of the technical staff for Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1968 as a software engineer to contribute to the development of the first computer-based telephone switching systems.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Herrick attended Kellogg Community College, where he earned an Associate of Applied Science in 1966. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1968 at Michigan State University before obtaining a Master of Science in electrical engineering at Purdue University in 1969 sponsored by Bell Telephone Laboratories. At Purdue University, he has contributed to the Minority Engineering Program, the college's Epsilon Tau Sigma national honor society, Advance: Purdue and the Center for Faculty Success, the Purdue Bicycle Team, the Veterans Fraternity, and the incubator class leading to a new, innovative degree based on competency based education. At Toledo University, he initiated the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Student Chapter for associate degree students; and, he and his wife held student pizza and sloppy joe help sessions at their home before upcoming exams, which they continued at Purdue University.
An expert in his field, Mr. Herrick has held leadership positions on several executive national boards, including the president of the Tau Alpha Pi National Honor Society, Editor in Chief of IEEE Press, cofounder and chair of the National Forum on Engineering Technology, and chair of the Frontiers in Education steering committee supported by IEEE and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He has served nationally and regionally as a member of numerous academic boards primarily within ASEE and IEEE. He also served the profession nationally as a program evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for most of his academic career.
Notably, Mr. Herrick served in the United States Air Force as a navigational aids technician from 1962 to 1964. He has been presented with the Charles B. Murphy Award, Purdue's highest undergraduate teaching honor, in 1992. He was inducted into Purdue's Book of Great Teachers, an honor reserved for only 267 faculty members in the history of the university at the time of this honor, in 2003. He was awarded the IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Service Award, in 1998. He was selected as a charter member and fellow to the Purdue Teaching Academy, in 1997. The ASEE additionally celebrated Mr. Herrick with the James H. McGraw Award for outstanding service in engineering technology education, in 2014; selection as an ASEE Fellow for outstanding and extraordinary qualifications, and experience in engineering or engineering technology education or allied field, and ASEE contributions, in 2012; the Frederick J. Berger Award in 2010 for excellence in engineering technology education; and the Hewlett Packard Award for Excellence in Laboratory Instruction, in 1999. It must be noted that Mr. Herrick began his teaching career in 1970 with pre-school 3 and 4 year old children in Sunday school with his wife Becky where they teamed up to include singing with his wife playing baritone ukulele and he playing classical guitar; truly an inspiring and fun experience. This was followed by a leave of absence from Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1972 to teach at Western Michigan University in the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Technology program, firmly implanting the passion for teaching and impacting student learning.
