Mr. Grenier excelled as a partner with Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP in Washington, DC from 1968 until his retirement in 2008. He established the energy law practice at the firm and participated in many cases before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (and related court proceedings) involving the development of national policy governing the delivery of natural gas throughout the nation. He served as lead counsel for the ultimately prevailing party in one of the largest energy cases before the FERC, the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System, which Mr. Grenier and his colleagues won following decision by the FERC and review by several departments of the U.S. government and a decision by President Jimmy Carter.
Mr. Grenier authored myriad published articles and chaired many conferences in his field. In addition, he participated actively in the American Bar Association for years, including chairmanship of the Association's Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice and membership in the Association's House of Delegates. He also served as President of the Energy Bar Association and member of its Board of Directors, as President of the Prettyman-Leventhal American Inn of Court and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia. Among his other organizational activities, Mr. Grenier served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Connelly School of the Holy Child from 1978 to 1985, as a member of the Board of Directors of D.C. Recording for the Blind from 1977 to 1989, as Chair of The Lighthouse Board of Trustees for several years and as President of The Thomas More Society of America for several years.
Mr. Grenier earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, in 1954 from Manhattan College. After serving as a second and then first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1956, he earned his Bachelor of Laws degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1959. After law school, Mr. Grenier served as law clerk to the Honorable E. Barrett Prettyman, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 1959-60 and then worked as an associate with the law firm of Covington and Burling in Washington from 1960 to 1968. He was admitted to the bar of the District of Columbia in 1959 and some years later to the New York State Bar. He is a member of the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States and of the bars of the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the D.C., Third, Fifth, Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Circuits. In light of his outstanding undertakings, Mr. Grenier has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
