After accruing many years of experience in nursing and philosophical education, Dr. Whelton became an emeritus professor of philosophy for Wheeling Jesuit University. She then earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Northeastern University (1972). Six years later, she earned a Master of Nursing Science at The Catholic University of America. In 1983, she returned to her alma mater, earning an MA and receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in 1996. With a depth of nursing and philosophical knowledge at her disposal, Dr. Whelton has recently published her book written in collaboration with her education colleague, Dr. Jane Neuenschwander, Humanity at the Heart of Practice: A Study of Ethics for Health-Care Students and Practitioners, Cambridge Scholars Publishing. She has contributed many articles in Philosophy of Health Care, including "Being human in a global age of technology" and "Human nature: A foundation for palliative care."
Dr. Whelton would like to acknowledge the significant contributions to her life made by those who believed in her: her uncle, J. Robert Nelson, her high school math and science teacher Dr. Wm. Perry, her sister, Dr. Jeanette Bryson, her major professor, Dr. William A. Wallace, O.P., and the professor who hired her as a nurse-philosopher at Wheeling Jesuit University, Dr. Thomas Michaud.
The 64th and 65th editions of Who's Who in America and the 28th edition of Who's Who of American Women honored Dr. Whelton. In the coming years, she intends to continue teaching and writing.
