Dr. James Kauffman Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Special Education

Dr. Kauffman retired in 2003 after more than 40 years of excellence in the field

    AFTON, VA, August 15, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. James Kauffman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Inspired by his mentor, Richard J. Whelan at the University of Kansas, Dr. Kauffman pursued a career in special education. He was a teacher at Southard School (children's division of the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, KS) from 1962 to 1964. He subsequently was a teacher in the Shawnee Heights Unified School District until 1967.

In 1969 he joined the faculty of the Illinois State University as an assistant professor of special education. He maintained a role in the same capacity with the University of Virginia from 1970 to 1973, whereupon he advanced to the position of associate professor until 1980. Between 1977 and 2003, he held a number of titles with the aforementioned institution, including chairman of the department of special education, associate dean of research, special education professor, the William Clay Parrish Junior Professor and the Charles S. Robb Professor. After 33 years of service as a faculty member at UVA, Dr. Kauffman retired in 2003.

Dr. Kauffman knew for many years that he wanted to pursue a career in education, earning a Bachelor of Science in education from Goshen College in 1962. Subsequently, he received a Master of Education from Washburn University and a Doctor of Education in special education through the University of Kansas in 1966 and 1969 respectively. In order to remain aware of changes in the field and network with other industry professionals, Dr. Kauffman has affiliated himself with the American Educational Research Association, the Council for Exceptional Children, the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities, the Society for Learning Disabilities and Remedial Education, the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders, and the CEC Division for Research. He has also taught and/or given conference presentations in Australia, Canada, Belgium, England, Sweden, Taiwan, and Turkey, and some of his publications involve scholars from other nations.

With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Kauffman has published more than 25 books in special education, including "Exceptional Learners: Introduction to Special Education," "Special Education: What It Is and Why We Need It," "Handbook of Special Education," and "Characteristics of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders of Children and Youth." From the 1970s until his retirement, Dr. Kauffman also served in editorial positions for "Exceptional Children," "Remedial and Special Education," "Analysis and Intervention in Developmental Disabilities," and "Learning Disability Quarterly."

Due to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Kauffman has earned grants through the University of Virginia and the U. S. Department of Education. He has received many awards for his work, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Kansas School of Education. A celebrated listee, he is featured in such publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. During his spare time, Dr. Kauffman enjoys spending time with his wife, Dr. Jeanmarie Badar, and his children from his first marriage, James Timothy (Tim) and Melissa Ellen Kauffman Schrock (Missy), and their three children.
