He is currently president and founder of Fitness After 50, a business he started at age 63. Fitness After 50 is devoted to making older people, including those with medical issues, more fit than they ever thought they could be. A 78-year-old cancer survivor who has undergone surgery and radiation treatments, Mr. Wilson is a certified Cancer Exercise Trainer whose message is that regular exercise, although not a cure for cancer, may reduce the risk that some types of cancer will be diagnosed, recur, or progress. His clients include survivors of breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer, some of whom he has trained online. Mr. Wilson also holds certifications in senior fitness, aquatic fitness, and group fitness.
In 1998 Mr. Wilson launched WilWrite, a firm specializing in preparing medical manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. His services include a complete literature search and statistical analysis of data. His clients include physicians and medical product companies with a worldwide presence. His nearly 100 clients include Christian Dior and L'Oreal and his publication success rate is close to 100%.
Prior to his entrepreneurial efforts, Mr. Wilson directed trackside laboratory operations for equine drug testing as part of Cornell University's School of Veterinary Medicine from 1985 to 1995. From 1968 to 1985 he was a clinical chemist for SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse NY; SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories in Boston, MA; Pathologists Associated Medical Laboratories in Muncie, IN, and The Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY. As a clinical chemist he was recognized for outstanding work in quality control, controlling costs in clinical laboratories, technical supervision, testing for therapeutic and abused drugs, blood lead analysis, and educational seminars.
Mr. Wilson's formal education began at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1963. He continued his studies in the Departments of Zoology and Chemistry at Syracuse University and then transferred to SUNY Upstate Medical University, earning a Master of Science in medical technology in 1973. Years later he earned nationally recognized certifications as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor by the American Council on Exercise; a fitness trainer, senior fitness specialist, and aquatic fitness specialist by the International Sports Sciences Association; a cancer exercise trainer by the American College of Sports Medicine; and a swimming instructor by the YMCA.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Mr. Wilson is affiliated with a number of professional organizations which include the American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association, and U.S. Masters Swimmers. He has contributed articles on exercises for cancer survivors to the Onondaga County Medical Society and shared his expertise on television on several occasions. Mr. Wilson is the author Fitness After 50, a book of exercises for older adults, and has produced exercise videos for older adults and prostate cancer survivors.
