McMullen with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Celebrating more than 45 years of expertise in the field of management consulting, Mr. McMullen has served as Founder and Managing Principal of Cambridge Meridian Group, Inc. since 1984. First commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy in 1964 he was assigned to a project involving retrofitting longer lived reactors into the Navy's nuclear submarine fleet which effectively greatly enlarged the at-sea capability of that fleet by matching the life of the ship (20 years) to the life of the reactor thereby precluding the need for submarines to refuel every five years. This experience ignited a fascination with management and technology that animated him throughout the course of his career.
Soon after leaving the armed forces he was accepted into the joint MBA/JD program at Harvard University. He received an MBA with High Distinction from Harvard Business School and was named a First Year Baker Scholar in 1972 -- and received as well as a JD with Honors from Harvard Law School in 1973. He was also named a Sheldon Travelling Fellow by Harvard University that year. The following year, Mr. McMullen was licensed to practice law by the Bars of Massachusetts and New York. A few years later he was licensed by the District of Columbia Bar.
With his career having begun in earnest, Mr. McMullen joined the Boston Consulting Group in 1975 and stayed until 1978 when he was invited to join Resource Planning Associates (RPA) as vice president and director. He remained there until 1984 when he left to found Cambridge Meridian Group that same year. Concurrently, he was invited to join the faculty of Harvard Law School as an adjunct professor teaching Business Strategy to law students remaining until 1990.
More recently, in addition to being on the Boards of several early stage technology companies, Mr. McMullen has been involved in elective politics, running two campaigns for the United States Senate in Vermont where he is a legal resident -- first as a Republican candidate in 1998 and later as the Party's nominee for Vermont in 2004.
In other affairs of civic engagement, Mr. McMullen served for more than a decade as a director of the Cambridge Center for Adult Education and had a similar tenure as Overseer of the New England Conservatory of Music. He currently serves as chair of the Ethan Allen Institute, a public policy think tank in Vermont. He is also serves as director of the Greater Burlington Industrial Corporation (GBIC) in Vermont and is a director of Associated Industries of Vermont (AIV). He is a past member of the American Bar Association.
He holds both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science from Columbia University in New York City in 1963 and 1964 respectively where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Society.
