Dr. Kenneth M. Watson is the former director of the marine physics laboratory and a professor of oceanography at the University of California San Diego.

Having accrued almost 60 years of professional experience, Dr. Watson is the former director of the marine physics laboratory and a professor of oceanography at the University of California San Diego. Previously, he worked as a professor of physics at the University of California Berkeley from 1957 to 1981. Prior to that post, Dr. Watson offered his services as an associate professor of physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1954 to 1957 and an assistant professor of physics at Indiana University Bloomington from 1952 to 1954.
Dr. Watson's career began in 1943, when he was employed as a research engineer at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. He subsequently held two additional research positions at the Institute for Advanced Study and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, also known as Berkeley Lab. Furthermore, he has found success as a former consultant for the Science Applications International Corporation, a former member of the U.S. President's Science Advisory Committee, and a former adviser to the White House National Security Council.
Prior to starting his professional journey, Dr. Watson pursued an education at Iowa State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1943. He completed additional coursework at the University of Iowa and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1948. Indiana University Bloomington later presented him with an honorary Doctor of Science in 1976.
A valuable member of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Watson is most recently the author of "Collision Theory" published in 2004 with M.L Goldberger. He published his first work, "Atomic Theory of Gas Dynamics," with J. Welch and J. Bond in 1966. Moreover, he is the author of "Topics in Several Particle Dynamics," and "Sound Transmission Through a Fluctuating Ocean."
