Having accrued five decades of work experience, Dr. McGuire is the president of Michael J. McGuire Inc., in Santa Monica. He has spent his career working for various water utility companies and consulted for many engineering firms regarding water utilities. He transitioned seamlessly into his career directly after college and worked for the Philadelphia Water Department from 1969 to 1973. Following that experience, Dr. McGuire served as a research associate at Drexel University from 1976 to 1977, and a principal engineer at Brown & Caldwell from 1977 to 1979.
From 1979 to 1992, Dr. McGuire held the progressively managerial positions of a water quality engineer, a water quality manager, a director of water quality, and an assistant general manager for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. Once he completed his time at the company, he acquired the role of the president at McGuire Environmental Consultants, Inc. from 1992 to 2005, whereupon it was sold to Malcolm Pirnie Inc. Dr. McGuire contributed prolifically in his new role as the vice president from 2005 to 2008.
Prior to his professional experiences, Dr. McGuire pursued an education at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 1969. He completed additional coursework at Drexel University, obtaining a Master of Science in environmental engineering in 1972. He progressed in his studies at the aforementioned university, from which he graduated in 1977 with a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental engineering. Dr. McGuire is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and California, as well as a diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists.
Outside of his immediate professional responsibilities, Dr. McGuire has contributed to numerous endeavors in his field. He has dedicated his time and services to the American Society of Civil Engineers, the International Water Association, the American Water Works Association (AWWA), and the International Ozone Association, among others. He is a valuable asset to the Water Science and Technology Board and has offered his skills to the committee on safe drinking water for the National Academy of Science. A recipient of a Publications Award in 2011, Dr. McGuire is the author of "The Chlorine Revolution," published in 2013. Moreover, he is the editor of 2 volumes of "Activated Carbon Adsorption of Organics from the Aqueous Phase," "Treatment of Water by Granular Activated Carbon," and "Information Collection Rule Data Analysis."
In 2009, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He was awarded the Abel Wolman Award from AWWA in 2016.
