Dr. Venkatachalam is a biochemist and a professor of biochemistry at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Fort Lauderdale. A faculty member since 1999, he is best known by students and faculty as "Dr. Venk." During his career at the university, he has held extramural and intramural grants, conducted research, and guided numerous medical students on research projects. He also taught biochemistry for medical, dental, pharmacy, and optometry students. In 2005, Dr. Venkatachalam became a full professor, and has continued to teach and perform research on human chemical processes. He has since expanded into projects concerning halitosis, periodontitis, and oncological research.
More recently, Dr. Venkatachalam was awarded a joint appointment with NSU college of allopathic medicine in 2017 with plans to expand his clinical research in the areas of cancer epigenetics, halitosis, and bone metabolism. Outside of his commitments at NSU, he became an affiliate research professor in the college of sciences at Florida Atlantic University in 2015. Prior to his teaching endeavors, he was a research fellow, scientist and faculty member of biochemistry at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Throughout his career, Dr. Venkatachalam has published numerous scientific papers in peer reviewed journals. He has also served as a journal editor and a reviewer for multiple different publications.
Dr. Venkatachalam earned a Bachelor of Science in botany at St. John's College and a Master of Science in immunology with first class honors at Madurai Kamraj University in his home country of India. Upon moving to the U.S., he acquired both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in plant biology at Washington State University, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University. Dr. Venkatachalam then spent three years as a postdoctoral fellow at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston between 1990 and 1993 where he further researched biochemical processes in enzymes.
Involved with several pertinent organizations, Dr. Venkatachalam is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is a member and a former South Florida chapter chairman of the American Chemical Society. Locally, Dr. Venkatachalam has been affiliated with the Indian Cultural Association (BKM) in Houston as the secretary, the vice present, and the president.
Dr. Venkatachalam secured a research grant from Great Lakes Ecology in 2000. He likewise received a Fellows Award for Research Excellence from the NIH. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
