Since his youth, Dr. Kaczorowski has been interested in science, frequently entering and winning science fairs. He initially attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating, summa cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1972. He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1977. From 1977 to 1980, Dr. Kaczorowski completed a Helen Hay Whitney postdoctoral research fellowship at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology.
Dr. Kaczorowski formally began his career at the Merck Institute of Therapeutic Research in Rahway, New Jersey, in 1980, serving as a senior research biochemist until 1984, the associate director of membrane biochemistry and biophysics from 1986 to 1988, and the director from 1988 to 1996. He further excelled at the Merck Institute as the senior director from 1996 to 2000 and the senior director of ion channels from 2001 to 2009. Dr. Kaczorowski subsequently found success as the chief executive officer and the president of Kanalis Consulting, LLC in 2009, and the co-founder of ChanThera, LLC, in 2019, posts he holds to this day.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kaczorowski has been published in more than 225 papers and flourished as a reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and many journals. He has presented papers at numerous professional conferences and has served on scientific advisory boards and as an Adjunct Professor. Among other distinctions, he was recognized as a Hoosier scholar from 1968 to 1972, a Notre Dame scholar from 1968 to 1972 and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Likewise, he is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Biological Chemists, now known as the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Biophysical Society.
