A celebrated attorney of more than 45 years, Mr. Hale practices in many areas of the law of the State of Alabama. He is currently the sole practitioner of his own private practice in Mobile, Alabama, which he established in 1992. He formerly served as partner at Hale, Hughes & Teague, was the Deputy Attorney General of the State of Alabama and also as special assistant attorney general for security fraud prosecutions and an assistant district attorney for Mobile County. During his career, Mr. Hale has served as a trial and appellate attorney before the Alabama Supreme Court on numerous cases of first impression in the state of Alabama. He also served as a probate court judge during 1995, 1997 and between 2017 and 2018.
During his tenure, Mr. Hale was a campaign manager for Charles A. Graddick for district attorney and attorney general and a strategist for Mr. Graddick when he ran for chief justice of the state of Alabama. He was also a strategist for Stephen R. Windom for state senate, lieutenant governor, governor and as the strategist for the Lieutenant Governor in the successful campaign in 1999 in opposition to the Alabama Lottery Constitutional Amendment. A lecturer in his field, Mr. Hale has spoken before the Alabama Judicial College and for the Alabama State Bar continuing legal education. Further, he has served on numerous committees, including the Alabama Law Institute's form indictment committee, criminal warrants and indictments committee, criminal code committee, and election law committee.
Mr. Hale graduated from Spring Hill College with a bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, in 1970. Receiving a scholarship from Duke University, he acquired a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1973. He has been admitted to the Alabama Bar Association since 1973, the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, the United State District Courts for the Middle and Southern District of Alabama and the Supreme Court of the United States.
One of Mr. Hale's many highlights as an attorney was the publication of an article in an October 1979 edition of the Alabama Lawyer entitled "Searches and Seizures in Violation of an Alabama Statute." Serving as the draftsman of the 1979 Amendments of the Alabama Criminal Code, which he based on law enforcement perspectives, Mr. Hale was fortunate to have Bob McCurley, Director of the Alabama Law Institute and adjunct professor of law at the University of Alabama, assist him greatly in the process which lead to the Criminal Code becoming the criminal law of the State of Alabama in 1980.
Affiliated with several industry-related organizations, Mr. Hale is currently a member and former vice chairman of the program committee for the Mobile Bar Association. He is also a member of the Alabama State Bar.
For more than a decade, Mr. Hale has served as a community leader. He has chaired the Parish Council of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and has lectured in Catholic churches throughout Mobile County on behalf of the Toolen Institute for Parish Services. Mr. Hale notably completed a three-year formation program for ecclesial lay ministry in 1992 through the Archdiocese of Mobile.
In 2011, Mr. Hale was named Attorney of the Year by Legal Services of Alabama. He has since also been named to several professional law publications and is a celebrated Marquis listee who has been showcased in Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
