From 1976 to 1993, she found success as an executive assistant to Democrat Joe Early in the U.S. House of Representatives. Previously, she excelled as an executive assistant to Republican Jack Kemp from 1974 to 1976.
Ms. Buchanan began her career in 1960, working as an executive director for the Baptist Good Will Center before progressing to the post of a community organizer for the Inner City Methodist Council in 1965. Important career experiences include the time, energy and leadership she provided to the Louisville and Jefferson County Community Action Commission's Anti-Poverty Program from 1967 to 1971 and her experience with the Kentucky Department of Child Welfare from 1971 to 1974. Notably, she received a Certificate of Appreciation from Hillary Clinton for her involvement in health care reform in 1993. Additionally, she has devoted her skills to the campaign teams of Obama for President in 2008 and 2011 as well as Hillary Clinton for President in 2015.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Buchanan pursued an education at Blue Mountain College, earning a Bachelor of Art in 1958. She completed additional coursework at the Carver School of Missions and Social Work, and subsequently graduated with a Master of Arts in 1960. Afterwards, she immediately became active as a political organization worker, a consultant, and a passionate advocate for human and civil rights.
The author of the article, "Lessons Our Children Teach Us," Ms. Buchanan is a member of the Southern Poverty Law Center, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Interfaith Alliance. Notably, she was the recipient of a Leadership Award from Life Pieces to Masterpieces in 2002, an Outstanding Service Award from Efforts from Ex-Convicts in 1992, and the Key to the City from the Worcester City Council in 1988. In 2005, she was honored with an Exceptional Philanthropist Award.
