Rhoda Samuels Nichter Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Nichter has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of local government

PLAINVIEW, NY, August 22, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Rhoda Samuels Nichter with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Nichter celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Ms. Nichter is a smoking cessation specialist who began her career in 1975 at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY. She introduced the I Quit Club as unique long-term reinforcement for her participants, which met frequently to help maintain abstinence. This greatly increased the long-term success rate of her program. She conducted similar smoking cessation programs for the Department of Drug and Alcohol Addiction. Ms. Nichter also spent three years as the Nonsmokers' Right Coordinator for the American Lung Association, where she was honored with a "Nonsmokers Rights" award for her efforts.

An accomplished writer in her field. Ms. Nichter is the author of the 1978 book, "Yes, I DO Mind If You Smoke!", and the 1980 book, "How To Stop Smoking Once and For All". She also produced and hosted "Smoking and Your Health" and "Health Trends" on WHPC-FM Radio.

Prior to becoming a smoking cessation specialist, Ms. Nichter was an advocate for the rights of nonsmokers. Struggling with being surrounded by secondhand smoke in her workplace and in public, she fought for change, writing letters to newspapers and raising consciousness as to the deleterious effect of tobacco smoke on children in the home and on people in public. Reaction to her letters prompted interviews by newspapers and magazines and invitations to appear on radio and TV programs.

Subsequently she founded the Group Against Smoking Pollution (GASP of New York), an all volunteer organization. Her husband generously funded printing and mailing of a newsletter. Not only did Ms. Nichter write the monthly newsletter sent to anyone interested in the rights of nonsmokers, but she wrote and distributed "Guide To A Smoke-Free Workplace" to more than 1000 requests.

Ms. Nichter volunteered to speak in libraries and to students of all ages from kindergarten through college to educate them on the "Hazards of Tobacco Smoke to Smokers and Nonsmokers."

In spite of intense opposition from the tobacco industry and restaurants, eventually lobbying efforts led by Ms. Nichter convinced local governments and then New York State to pass legislation banning smoking in almost all public places, such as restaurants, bars, workplaces, hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, museums, public transportation, jury deliberation rooms, stores, entrances to public buildings. Many condominiums and co-op buildings voluntarily voted to make their buildings smoke-free. Many office buildings declared corridors and lobbies smoke-free, citing GASP's information about the additional cost of cleanup of smokers' debris and the additional cost of cleaning the smoke-laden air in the ventilating system.

Involved with several local organizations, Ms. Nichter is a past president of "Women's American Organization for Rehabilitation Through Training" (ORT), an autonomous affiliate of a world-wide Jewish volunteer organization. It is dedicated to fighting poverty by providing training in vocational skills to help people become productive members of society. Ms. Nichter has been president of the Sunday Circle at the Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Ms. Nichter has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
