Mr. Richerson pursued studies in ceramic science and engineering at the University of Utah from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1967. He then attended Pennsylvania State University graduating with a Master of Science in ceramic science and engineering in 1969. His career then spanned almost 50 years in research, management, consulting and academia prior to his retirement in 2013.
First employed in 1969 at Norton Company in Worcester, Massachusetts as a research engineer, he conducted cutting-edge R&D on silicon nitride ceramics. He was honored for this work with the 1972 Admiral Earle Award from the Worcester Engineering Society. From 1973 to 1985 he was supervisor of ceramics at Garrett Turbine Engine Company, but also began in 1980 teaching adjunct classes on structural ceramics at Arizona State University. This led to publishing of the first edition of the textbook Modern Ceramic Engineering in 1982. From 1985 to 1991 Mr. Richerson first was Director of R&D and subsequently Vice President of Technology Development at Ceramatec, Incorporated in Salt Lake City, UT.
Mr. Richerson established his own consulting company, Richerson and Associates, in 1991 and consulted extensively with the Department of Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratories and a wide variety of corporations. He also taught internationally 2-day to 4-day courses on ceramics and composites. In parallel, he began teaching at the University of Utah as Adjunct Associate Professor and continued there until his retirement. In 2013 he was invited to be Manager of Minerals at the Natural History Museum of Utah and has continued in that staff position.

He is the author of both additions of The Magic of Ceramics published in 2000 and 2011 and four editions of the textbook Modern Ceramic Engineering published in 1982, 1992, 2006 and 2018 and adopted internationally. The first edition of the latter title was translated into Japanese, and the first edition of the former title was translated into Korean. The Magic of Ceramics also has been selected by the Ceramics and Glass Foundation to be included in a curriculum kit to introduce high school teachers and students to ceramic engineering. Other education outreach has included being Principal Investigator and Program Manager on National Science Foundation programs through the University of Utah working with elementary school and high school students. These efforts led to being honored with the Outstanding Service Award from the University of Utah in 2009. Since retirement, Mr. Richerson has lectured internationally on natural history, history of materials, cultures and mineral wealth of Mexico and South America, evolution of pottery and cultures in Mexico and South America, climate change and evolution of prehistoric life.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Mr. Richerson was a Fellow and on the Board of Directors of the American Ceramic Society and established and was Chair of their Ceramic Education Committee from 1991-2002, He was an active member of the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers and the Ceramic Education Council. In 2007 Mr. Richerson received the Friedberg Lecture award from the American Ceramic Society. He was also honored by invitation to serve on two National Material Advisor Board studies "Reliability of Ceramics for Heat Engines" and "Tribology of Ceramics."
