Leveraging 45 years' practiced experience in domestic and foreign intellectual property law, Mr. Buff excels as managing partner for Ernest D. Buff & Associate s. Since establishing the firm in 2004, he has represented clients in all aspects of intellectual property, including the formation and administration of patent estates, patent and trademark prosecution, patent litigation, and licensing. Earlier in his career, he gained valuable expertise as an attorney with Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti LLP, as well as Allied Chemical, which is now known as Honeywell. Mr. Buff worked for thirty (30) years as an assistant general counsel to AlliedSignal, Inc., during which he handled a number of patent and trademark litigation cases, including an infringement suit against a German chemical company that made its way to the German Federal Supreme Court.
An expert in his field, Mr. Buff holds a Bachelor of Science in engineering, which he earned from Syracuse University in 1966, as well as a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Boston University School of Law in 1969. He was subsequently admitted to practice through the New Jersey State Bar, the Massachusetts State Bar, the District of Columbia Bar, the Patent Bar, the U.S. Court of Claims, the U.S. Federal Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. In order to network with other professionals in the field, Mr. Buff maintains his membership with the Morris County and American Bar Associations as well. Since 2003, he has also contributed his time and resources to the President's Advisory Council for Small Business and served as Chairperson for the Far Hills, NJ Board of Health.
During his engineering studies, Mr. Buff earned the William Berry Award for excellence in English, as well as a Chicago Tribune Silver Medal Award, as the outstanding Sophomore ROTC Cadet. Looking toward the future, he intends to remain with the Firm and help people from all walks of life. Mr. Buff also aims to reengage with his love of music, bridge and literature, and spend more time with his wife, Elizabeth, their two children and their two grandchildren.
