Dr. Bissada is a researcher and urgologist affiliated with the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston and a professor of urology at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX. Hired by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1973 as an assistant professor of urology, he later became an associate professor in 1977, remained in this role for two years and later returned as a full professor in 2003. He also spent a little over two decades in the field, first as a consultant urologist for King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 1979 to 1987, then as the chief of urologic surgery at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center until 2003. In 1987, Dr. Bissada also served as a professor and chief of urologic oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina and as vice chair of the urology department until 2003.
A pioneer in several significant surgical and medical urologic treatment methods, Dr. Bissada was responsible for the development of the Charleston pouch technique for continent urinary diversion. He has also extensively researched urologic reconstructive techniques. A speaker and writer in his field, he authored his first book, "Lower Urinary Tract Function and Dysfunction: Diagnosis and Management," in 1978, followed by "Pharmacology of the Urinary Tract and the Male Reproductive System" in 1982 and "Prostate Biopsy" in 2011. Dr. Bissada has contributed hundreds of articles to professional journals and chapters to several books as well.
An elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Pediatrics Urology, Dr. Bissada is also a fellow and former co-chair of the division of urology with the United States section of the International College of Surgeons. He is a past president of the Arkansas Urologic Society, the South Carolina Urological Association, the Egyptian American Urological Association, the Arab Association of Urology and the National Arab American Medical Association. Furthermore, Dr. Bissada is a longtime member of the American Urological Association, where he received a First Prize Award from the Southeastern section, the Societe Internationale D'Urologie and the Society of Urologic Oncology, among other organizations.
Acquiring a Doctor of Medicine at Cairo University in Egypt in 1963, Dr. Bissada went on to intern at the Cairo University Hospitals and completed a residency in surgery at Babelsharia General Hospital and a second residency in urology at the University of North Carolina Medical Center, where he served as chief resident. He has also been certified by the American Board of Urology.
Receiving an Educational Excellence Award from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Silver Award for best on line health information by the American Urological Association, Dr. Bissada has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World.
