In the years prior, she was the Senior Financial Officer of the Arizona University System and Associate Executive Director of the Arizona Board of Regents, Director of Strategic Planning for Arizona State University, Associate Director of Finance and Facilities for the Maryland State Board of Higher Education, School Finance Specialist for the Illinois State Board of Education, Assistant Professor, an Business Manager for the University of Illinois Foundation. Dr. McKeown-Moak's career began in 1966 when she was a head resident advisor at Eastern Michigan University.
Prior to her professional career, Dr. McKeown-Moak initially began her education at Michigan State University, earning both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in 1966. She completed additional coursework at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1974. Dr. McKeown-Moak was a certified real estate agent in Illinois and certified to teach in Michigan.
An editor of several professional journals, Dr. McKeown-Moak is the author of "The Roles and Responsibilities of a Chief Financial Officer," "Higher Education Finance Research: Policy, Practice, and Politics," and "School Business Administration" in addition to over 200 published articles on the economics, finance, and management of education. In 2015 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Education Finance Academy, and was named a Distinguished Research and Practice Fellow. Outside of her professional responsibilities, Dr. McKeown-Moak has been a member of the American Education Research Association, the Travis Audubon Society, Impact Austin, the National Education Finance Academy, and was president of the American Education Finance Association, chair of the State Higher Education Finance Officers, and president of the Fiscal Issues, Policy, and Education Finance Special Interest Group of the American Education Research Association.
