Mr. Clarkson is a professional photographer, a magician, an entrepreneur, and a former educator who has been in living and working in Helena his entire life. Establishing Clarkson Studio in 1974 as the owner and a photographer, he specializes in commercial media and public relations, private portraiture, stock images, and internet web pages, and additionally has experience shooting weddings, beauty pageants, and other events. Initially becoming familiar with on-air radio and TV personalities while in high school, by the 1980s he had been accepted an appointment as a digital technology image evaluator for Kodak Corporation. Today, Mr. Clarkson is an internationally published photographer.
A multifaceted artist, Mr. Clarkson has been a local illusionist for more than 50 years, entertaining audiences of hundreds throughout his career. He has likewise lent his expertise as a drama coach in the Helena School District. Further, Mr. Clarkson is owner and operator of The Sleepy Senator Bed and Breakfast in Helena. After completing a two-year study in the hospitality and inn management program through the Professional Association of Innkeepers International, he purchased and remodeled a home and turned it into a beautiful bed and breakfast for customers in 2003. In addition to offering rooms for vacationers, Mr. Clarkson occasionally officiates civil nuptial ceremonies on site as an ordained minister affiliated with the Universal Life Church in Modesto, California.
Throughout his career in photography, Mr. Clarkson enjoyed several great opportunities, having been an official show photographer for the Society of American Magicians International Magic Entertainment Conventions at theaters across the United States. He also produced photographs for Helena's Community Grandstreet Theatre, one of Montana's largest theatres located in the downtown area of Helena. He was a photographer for the Montana Senate and the Montana House of Representatives in Helena and was a press officer for the Montana Army National Guard in Helena, and later assigned to Sixth Region U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command where he photographed images for the 42nd Annual Nuclear Planning Group in Monterrey.
Born and raised in Helena, Mr. Clarkson attended Carroll College, received a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1973. Prior to earning his degree, he enlisted in the Montana Air National Guard, serving between 1970 and 1974. Mr. Clarkson subsequently spent a further five years in the Montana Army National Guard and 12 years in the U.S. Army Reserves.
A guest teacher for numerous lectures on ethics, lighting, and technique at area schools, he is a life member in the Society of American Magicians, where he once served as a regional vice president, assembly president, a national deputy, and had served as an emcee for several of the society's international conventions. He received an Award of Achievement and an Alliance of Harry Houdini Award from the organization for his contributions. He is likewise affiliated as a magical member in the Hollywood Magic Castle/Academy of Magical Arts Hollywood, Masons and Shriners. Locally, Mr. Clarkson has served as a secretary of the Lewis and Clark County Emergency Services council, as a moderator for the Disciples of Christ Church, and a publicly elected officer on the Helena Citizen's Council in 1999-2001.
Mr. Clarkson received a Certificate of Merit from the Professional Photographers of America and a Wizard's Award from The International Brotherhood of Magicians. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, and Who's Who in the World. Adjacent to his career, Mr. Clarkson's avocations have included flying, scuba diving, skiing, auto racing, computer programming, and woodworking.
