ANN ARBOR, MI, August 29, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Judith Laikin Elkin with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Elkin celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Elkin is the Founding President of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association (LAJSA). She retired as an Associate of the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan, having taught at that university as an adjunct professor of history from 1984-85. She was the 1989 DeRoy Visiting Professor in the University's Honors program and in 1992 directed a year-long program on "Jews and the Encounter with the New World," which was based at the U of M and funded by NEH. From 1957 to 1968, Dr. Elkin taught, first, at Wayne State University and then at Albion College, attaining the rank of associate professor.

Prior to entering the field of education, Judith Laikin, as she was then known, competed and won appointment as a United States Foreign Service Officer, the only female FSO appointed that year (1952). Although trained as a Latin Americanist, she was assigned to the American embassies in India, Pakistan, Burma (now Myanmar), Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Afghanistan as Third Secretary and Vice Consul (1952-54). Her next assignment was to London, where she served in a similar capacity (1954-56). Due to the official policy against marriage by female officers, she then resigned. In 1959, she married Sol M. Elkin, an educator and labor arbitrator.

In preparation for a professional career, Dr. Elkin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature at the University of Michigan in 1948 and a Master's degree in International Affairs at Columbia University in 1950. She earned a Ph.D. in History at the University of Michigan in 1976.

Dr. Elkin is the author of several books and numerous articles on the subject of Latin American Jewish populations. Titles include "Latin American Jewish Studies: An Annotated Guide to the Literature," "The Jewish Presence in Latin America," and "The Jews of Latin America," now in its 3rdedition. She founded the "Latin American Jewish Newsletter" and edited it for 18 years. Other books by Elkin include "Krishna Smiled: Assignment in Southeast Asia," "Walking Made My Path," and "The Great Lakes Colleges Association: Twenty-one years in Higher Education." She is a member of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association, American Historical Association, and Michigan Jewish Historical Association.

Brought together by LAJSA, Dr. Elkin and fellow scholars have organized a series of International Research Conferences hosted by prestigious American universities as well as by institutions in Argentina, Israel and Brazil. LAJSA's 19th conference will be held in Curacao in June 2020. She is the recipient of notable honors, including grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1989, a grant from the American Council of Learned Societies in 1985 and 1988, and Fulbright Senior Research Fellow Award in 1984, among others.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Elkin has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
