Dr. Inoguchi is a Japanese academic researcher of foreign affairs, a leading authority in political science and education, and the current eminent scholar professor of political science of J. F. Oberlin University, Tokyo. Previously having taught in academia for nearly half a century, he has held the title of professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo since 2005. Previously he was President of the University of Niigata Prefecture and Senior Vice President of the United Nations University, Tokyo. Dr. Inoguchi was affiliated with Chuo University and Sophia University in Tokyo, the University of Geneva in Switzerland, and Harvard University in the United States.
In addition to his full-time academic commitments, Dr. Inoguchi has provided his expertise as a distinguished visiting professor at the National University of Singapore, the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, and Australian National University on several occasions. He was likewise a senior vice rector at United Nations University. He is a former assistant secretary to the United Nations who has also served on multiple committees over the years, including the United States Social Science Research Council Peace and Security Committee, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization International Committee of Peace Research.
Since 2002, Dr. Inoguchi has been the director of the AsiaBarometer Survey, for which he earned the distinction of being the only scholar, worldwide, to carry out the survey in all 32 Asian countries west of the Middle East. He is also president of the Asian Consortium for Political Research, counsellor to the Suntory Foundation and member of the International Economic Exchange Foundation and the International Trade and Investment Foundation.
A leading authority in his field, Dr. Inoguchi has contributed approximately 150 books over the years, 110 of which are in Japanese, and 40 in English. Most recently, he authored "Trust with Asian Characteristics: Interpersonal and Institutional," published in 2017 through Springer and "Exit, Voice and Loyalty in Asia" in 2018, also through Springer. Forthcoming in December 2019 are The Development of Global Legislative Politics: Rousseau and Locke Writ Global, also through Springer and The SAGE Handbook of Asian Foreign Policy (2 vols.), through Sage publications. He has written on topics such as Japanese politics and foreign policy, East Asian international relations, Asian comparative politics, quality of life in Asia and evidence-based typology of Asian societies. Dr. Inoguchi has been recognized as the founding editor of the Japanese Journal of Political Science, the International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, and the Asian Journal of Comparative Politics as well.
A graduate of Niigata High School, Dr. Inoguchi soon after attended the University of Tokyo where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts in 1966 and a Master of Arts in international relations in 1968. He later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in political science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S. in 1974. Dr. Inoguchi is a member and a past president of the Japanese Association of International Relations. Among other industry related organizations, he is a member of the American Political Science Association, the Japanese Political Science Association, and the International Studies Association.
Securing multiple grants from the Ministry of Education, Dr. Inoguchi was also a visiting scholar at nearly a dozen different institutions. He received a 2007 International Communications Fund Award for Research Excellence and a 2008 Japanese Public Policy Association Award. For his academic legacy, the International Society for Quality of Life Society has established the "Takashi Inoguchi Endowed Track on Quality of Life and Well-being in East Asia" award in his name. For his writing contributions, he was honored with a Suntory Best Book Award and a Proze Award from the Association of American Publishers for his contribution to The International Encyclopedia of the School and Behavioral Sciences, second edition.
