Supported by more than 40 years of experience in education and economics, Dr. von Furstenberg is a professor emeritus of economics at Indiana University in Bloomington. Serving the university as a J.H. Rudy Professor of Economics from 1983 to 2000 and again from 2002 to 2006, he recently acted as an economics program director at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia, from 2006 to 2008. Prior to these appointments, he was a Robert Bendheim chair of economic and financial policy at Fordham University in New York City for two years, the division chief of the research department of the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., for five years, and an assistant, associate and full professor of economics at Indiana University for a total of 28 years. Likewise, Dr. von Furstenberg excelled in his position of senior staff economist with the President's Council of Economic Advisers from 1973 to 1976.
Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Dr. von Furstenberg was a program director for the American Council of Life Insurance, economic-policy fellow at the Brookings Institution and a visiting senior economist with the planning and economic analysis staff at the United States Department of State. He also contributed his skills as a Bissell-Fulbright visiting professor of Canadian-American relations at the University of Toronto from 1994 to 1995, as well as a visiting research economist in the economics department of the Deutsche Bundesbank in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2004.
He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in economics, magna cum laude, from Columbia University and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in economics from Princeton University. An accomplished author in his field, he has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and reviews to op-eds, and has written and edited several books as well. Most recently, he authored "Contingent Convertibles [CoCos]: A Potent Instrument for Financial Reform" in 2014 and was an associate editor of the Journal of Economic Asymmetries from 2004 to 2010. He was the president of the North American Economics and Finance Association in 2000, where he formerly sat as president-elect and program chair.
With contributions in several fields such as open-economy macroeconomics, international finance, mortgage and corporate finance, public finance, theory of income distribution, and financial reform, he has been listed in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Economics and Who's Who in the World.
