In 1989, Steve Kim was the centennial artist for the Washington State Centennial Commission and was recognized as the cultural ambassador for the City of Seattle in 1987.

Having accrued almost 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Kim is currently an associate professor and a music instructor at Shoreline Community College in Shoreline. He was previously an instructor at the aforementioned college from 1989 to 1997. In the year prior, he found success as a bassist for Alphonse Mouzon and a jazz guitarist for Larry Coryell. Mr. Kim served as an associate professor at Pacific Lutheran University from 1991 to 1992. He began his career as a composer for the Bill Evans Dance Company from 1980 to 1998. Within that time, he also excelled as a bassist for the new-age pianist, Scott Cossu.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Kim pursued an education from American jazz double-bassist, Gary Peacock, with whom he took private lessons from 1975 to 1977. He continued private instruction with lessons from the double-bassist Ray Brown, in 1985, and extensive study under Charles Banacos from 1987 to 1990, and 1995 to 2009. Mr. Kim is the composer of Three Themes from Josephine, assisted by an individual artist grant in 1985, and composed the film score, "The Man from Wakpala."
Outside of his immediate professional endeavors, Mr. Kim is an active member of the American Federation of Musicians. In 1989, he was the centennial artist for the Washington State Centennial Commission and was recognized as the cultural ambassador for the City of Seattle in 1987. Notably, Mr. Kim was honored as a scholar of the Ford Foundation in 1974 and received the Teacher Excellence Award from the Evergreen State College in 2015. Aside from his recognitions and honors, sharing his experience with his students remains one of his many career highlights.
