A talented fashion designer, visual artist, actress and educator for many years, Dr. Blackwell officially retired in 2001 from the Washington, DC, public school system. Teaching in the District of Columbia for the first decade of her career, she left, only to return years later in 1989, where she remained for another 12 years. She also taught at Morgan State University and George Washington University. In the field, Dr. Blackwell was a fashion consultant for Woodward & Lothrop Corporation in Columbia, Maryland, and a community coordinator for the Duke Ellington School of Arts.
As an artist, Dr. Blackwell's work has been included in various exhibitions, including "A Proud Continuum: Eight Decades of Art" at Howard University in 2005. Her art has been on display at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery in Washington, DC, and various other locations. Dr. Blackwell spent time designing stage and sportswear for gospel recording artist Joii Fox. Additionally, she acquired several acting gigs, including roles on the HBO cable television series "The Wire" between 2005 and 2006 and in the 2006 movie "Twenty Questions" directed by Michael Engler.
An alumnus of Howard University, Dr. Blackwell received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in 1963 and 1967, respectively. She later acquired a Doctor of Education from George Washington University in 1980. She is a certified teacher in Washington, DC.
Dr. Blackwell has been a member of The Actors' Center since 2006. The Center includes a collective of diverse professional actors committed to deepening their craft and challenging themselves in collaboration with likeminded peers. She has also been a member of the English Institute at Harvard University since 1990, as well as the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Art Impact International, and Black Arts of DC.
In 2003, Dr. Blackwell received a Merit Award at the All-Island Juried Art Show. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
