Dr. Omotoso is a senior special advisor at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a global development arm of the United Nations (UN). Among other responsibilities during his 30-year career at the United Nations and UNDP, Dr. Omotoso was Secretary of the ministerial-level World Food council, based in Rome, Italy. He was the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Plenipotentiary Conference which established the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a billion-dollar UN agency for funding agricultural development in the less developed countries of the world. Dr. Omotoso was the signatory, on behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General, of the instrument that created IFAD.
He served as UNDP's Director of External Relations, and later as United Nations Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative, and Director of the United Nations Information Center in two southern African countries.
Dr. Omotoso also worked for five years at the Headquarters of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in Vienna, Austria, There, he was Head of communications and external relations, often serving as Officer-in-Charge of the whole of OPEC Secretariat.
Following his retirement from the UN, Dr. Omotoso was elected to the Governing Board of the Association of Former International Civil Servants (AFICS), in New York. He served as President of this Association (for retirees of the UN system), from 2008 to 2010. Thereafter, he was elected an honorary member, for life, of its Governing Board.
Currently, he is President of Eddy Omotoso Associates, in New York, since 2001.
An esteemed diplomat, journalist, and attorney, Dr. Omotoso is also the author of "A Life Around the World: Surprise International Career Leads to Global Odyssey," an autobiography published in 2008. The book chronicles his upbringing and advancement. It details his education and career path, specifically his rise to several senior positions, where he occupied front row seats at major global conferences and significant political, diplomatic, and economic development events around the world. The book discusses his many important assignments, the places where he worked or visited, and the individuals he interacted with, including Presidents, Prime Ministers, cabinet ministers, and other top-level officials from around the world.
Outside of his book, Dr. Omotoso notably serves as publisher and editor-in-chief of Esa-Oke Today, a community magazine, and he has been a well-known columnist or writer for some of the largest newspapers in Nigeria, his country of birth.
Dr. Omotoso was educated at some of the world's most prestigious universities. He graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London, earning a Bachelor of Laws degree, with honors, in 1966. He obtained a Master of Science in journalism at Columbia University, New York City in 1967. He obtained his doctorate in journalism through off-campus distance learning in 1979, and undertook executive education postgraduate studies at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2004.
