She is active in foreign language associations and serves as Chair of the AATF (American Association of Teachers of French) Commission on Advocacy.
Having accrued over 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Stein-Smith is currently the associate university librarian, and director of public services, Giovatto Library, and an adjunct faculty member of foreign languages and related areas at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She received the Pillar of FDU Award in 2007, and the Outstanding Educator Award in 2018. Since 1990, she excelled with the aforementioned university, in the prior positions of a reference librarian, the head of the periodicals department, and an information literacy coordinator. From 1981 to 1989, she found success as bilingual library director at the West New York Public Library. She began her career as a teacher at St. Mary's High School in Rutherford. She has taught French at the high school, college, and community school levels, and Spanish at the high school and college level.
Dr. Stein-Smith initially pursued an education in French at Montclair State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1972. In the same year, she received an Honours Bachelor of Arts in French, avec grande distinction, from Université Laval in Québec. Dr. Stein-Smith also earned a Master of Arts from Laval in 1977.
Dr. Stein-Smith completed further study at the Middlebury Summer Language Schools in 1977 and 1978 before obtaining a Master of Science from Columbia University in 1979. In 1996, she obtained a Master of Arts from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her education concluded in 2011, when she graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from the Union Institute & University.
A contributor of articles in many peer-reviewed and practitioner publications, Dr. Stein-Smith is the author of 4 books, "The U.S. Foreign Language Deficit and Our Economic and National Security: A Bibliographic Essay on the U.S. Language Paradox," "The U.S. Foreign Language Deficit and How It Can Be Effectively Addressed in a Globalized World: A Bibliographic Essay," and "The U.S. Foreign Language Deficit: Strategies for Maintaining A Competitive Edge in a Globalized World" and "The Gift of Languages: Paradigm Shift in U.S. Foreign Language Education."
She is an active member of the American Association of Teachers of French, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, American Library Association and Association of College and Research Libraries, the American Translators Association, the Central States Conference on the Teaching Foreign Languages, the Modern Language Association, the New Jersey Library Association, and the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (in alphabetical order). Since 2015, she has served as the Chair for the American Association of Teachers of French Commission on Advocacy. She is a member of the Advisory Council of the NECTFL and the CSCTFL, a SCOLT (Southern Conference on Language Teaching) sponsor, and a member of the Education & Pedagogy Committee of the ATA. She is also a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society—La Société d'Honneur de Français.
