With more than 40 years of experience in choral directing to her credit, Dr. Dettwiler has become an authority in her industry and currently serves as the director of choral activities at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. Previously, she excelled as a vocal music teacher at Mount Horeb High School in Wisconsin from 1970 to 1977, the director of music at Christ Presbyterian Church in Madison, Wisconsin, from 1979 to 1984 and the director of choral activities at St. Mary's University in San Antonio from 1985 to 1988. Dr. Dettwiler has served as a guest conductor and lecturer at institutions throughout the country.
Prior to becoming an esteemed choral director, Dr. Dettwiler pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Science from the University Wisconsin-Platteville in 1970. Going on to study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she earned a Bachelor of Music in 1980 and a Master of Music in 1982. Likewise, she earned a Master of Music from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1985. Obtaining a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, in 1991, Dr. Dettwiler was mentored by Donald Neuen, a choral professor, during her time at the Eastman School.
Notably, Dr. Dettwiler produced two DVDs called "Developing a Vocal Color Palette for Various Choral Styles" and "Sing in Style." With an impressive debut as a choral conductor at Carnegie Hall in 2014, she also served on the jury for the World Choir Games in Russia and presented an interest session at the World Choral Symposium in South Korea. Alongside her professional responsibilities, she remains informed of the changes and advancements in her industry through relevant organizations. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education and the American Choral Directors Association. In light of her many achievements in the field, Dr. Dettwiler has received a number of awards and accolades throughout her career. She received Second Prize for Choral Conductors at the university level in 2011 and 2013, the Presidential Coin for Excellence from Brig. Gen. Francis Hendricks and the Elaine Brown Award for Choral Excellence from the American Choral Directors Association. Dr. Dettwiler has also been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women.
