Dr. Harris was a medical educator and physician who specialized in neonatal palliative care, chronic illnesses and end of life care. Formerly an assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston between 2006 and 2015, she also served as a master teacher in the school's educational scholars fellowship program during 2011 and was a hospital-based instructor of the neonatal resuscitation program between 2000 and 2015. Now taking some time off to raise her children, she plans to reenter the medical field very soon.
In recent years, Dr. Harris was a bereavement coordinator and an extracorporeal life support clinician specialist. She also spoke numerous times for lecture series on topics such as palliative care of the newborn and pediatric and neonatal care. She served as a host for numerous committees, including the Remember Me Always Ceremony planning committee, the perinatal advisory committee and the bereavement program steering committee at Texas Children's Hospital. Further, Dr. Harris chaired the palliative care committee and served on the committee on fetus and newborn for the Texas Pediatric Society and served on the student affairs committee at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Harris has been active with numerous civic organizations. She served on the alumni board of directors and on the medical mentorship program at St. John's School in Houston. She was also active on the medical mentorship program at Texas Children's Hospital High School and was affiliated with the Baylor Pediatrics Student Association mentor program.
Writing extensively in her field, Dr. Harris has contributed chapters to several books. She has authored or co-authored articles in various scholarly journals, including the Journal of Laparoendoscopic and Advanced Surgical Techniques and the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, and has written material for numerous national and international meetings. She was also an invited reviewer for the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Harris first studied at Southwestern University before earning a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College in 1995. She then earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston in 2000. Additional educational pursuits include an internship and residency in the department of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and a fellowship in the neonatology section of the department of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Texas since 2004, Dr. Harris is certified in hospice and palliative medicine, pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine.
A fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Harris is also a member of several professional organizations. Some of these include the New England Historical Genealogical Society, the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Texas Pediatric Society and the Harris County Medical Society. Securing several grants from the Texas Children's Hospital Educational Project and the Texas Pediatric Society Foundation, Dr. Harris also received a Young Investigator's Travel Award from the Pediatric Academic Society in 2005. Other recognitions include an Executive Board Award from the Texas Pediatric Society in 2013 and a Special Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2015. Dr. Harris was a Super Doctors nominee for 2015, was named to Texas Super Doctors Rising Stars every year between 2012 and 2014, and has been a featured listee in the 69th and 70th editions of Who's Who in America.
