An award-winning, international master painter and educator, Ms. Segal was also a recognized freelance advertising graphic design artist and is owner of Long Shadow Studio in Studio City, California. In business since 1985, she simultaneously spent several years in academia. Teaching drawing to children at the University of California Los Angeles, she also taught graphic design and advertising at both California State University in Northridge and Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California, Glendale College, Glendale, CA, and computer graphics at Moorpark College, Moorpark, CA, and was a background artist with Hanna-Barbera Studio. Early on, Ms. Segal lent her expertise as an art director, first for Freeman & Associates in Beverly Hills, California, and then for the Independent Automotive Parts of America and Specialty Automotive magazines in North Hollywood, California, before beginning her own design firm.
A pivotal point in her career's journey was spending time with Georgia O'Keefe at her studio/home in Abiquiú, NM. With Ms. O'Keefe's encouraging acknowledgement concerning her committment of a life devoted to expressing herself through a painting.
Best known for her extensive nature painting series, Ms. Segal's pieces concentrate on the reflective play of light on water. Her very first exhibition was notably a 5' x 4' waterdrop painting at the New Orleans Museum of Fine Art, formerly the Delgado Museum. Fine art exhibitions of her work have since been on display in Shanghai, China; Florence, Milan, Venice and Lake Como, Italy; Paris and Cannes, France, and London, England. They have also been on display at the Tokyo, New Orleans, LA, and Brownsville, TX Museums of Fine Art and in group and solo exhibitions throughout the United States.
Some of Ms. Segal's paintings were accepted into the International Competition of American Women Artists, which included a month-long show in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a three-nation international competition and an internet international competition online. Her Korean series has also been featured on the nightly World News broadcast by the Korean Broadcasting Service and in a web-based magazine sponsored by the Korean government. In addition to her wealth of knowledge and expertise as a painter, Ms. Segal's creativity has reached an even greater audience as the art director for the 1984 film "Return of the Country" and as a prop maker for the NBC television series "Little House on the Prairie."
Cultivating her skills through years of education, Ms. Segal completed coursework at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette from 1967 to 1969 and at Tulane University in New Orleans in 1969. Continuing her studies, she joined California State University, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1975. Ms. Segal concluded her academic efforts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1984.
In honor of her life's work, Ms. Segal has been the subject of a short documentary film called "Seraphine: An Intimate Portrait," which showcases her atelier while painting and sharing candid commentary regarding the dichotomy between creativity and the female artist. The recipient of numerous awards over the years, Ms. Segal was also extremely honored to receive second place at both the Ventura County Fair and the California State Fair for her hand-stitched memory quilt of her late husband, Rodney Buckner's life.
