Dr. Ireson is a religious administrator and educator with more than 40 years of dedicated service in his field. He initially pursued an education at DePauw University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He continued his studies at Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, earning his Master of Divinity in 1966. Ordained as an elder of the United Methodist Church the same year, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Manchester in 1974. Dr. Ireson has been additionally presented with eight honorary doctorates from institutions around the world for his contributions.
From 1970 to 1975, Dr. Ireson worked as an associate pastor at Franklin Community Church, in Franklin, Michigan, and served as a pastor of Saint Paul Church in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, from 1975 to 1979. He later was appointed to Saint Timothy Church in Detroit, Michigan, as a senior pastor from 1979 to 1988. Dr. Ireson remembers his time at Saint Timothy as a career highlight, as it was an opportunity to serve in a diverse urban city with is challenges.
In 1988, Dr. Ireson accepted the position of general secretary of the board of higher education and ministry of the United Methodist Church, where he worked with Methodist institutions and was responsible for the development of Africa University in Zinbabwe, which has students from 26 African nations. He held this post until 2001, when he became a professor of philosophy and religion at Martin Methodist College of Tennessee until 2018, and Green Mountain College of Vermont until 2009. Previously Dr. Ireson has been lecturer at Lawrence Technological University and an assistant professor at Marygrove College in Detroit.
Dr Ireson was elected founding president emeritus of the International Association of Methodist Schools, Colleges, and Universities in 2005, an organization of 1,000 institutions in 80 countries. He served as a trustee of American University in Washington, D.C. from 1990 to 2001. He has accepted numerous awards for his exemplary work, including a 1989 Garrett Seminary in 2001. In 2001, Dr. Ireson was celebrated with the publication of a festschrift, "Serving God With Heart and Mind: A Festschrift in Honor of Roger W. Ireson."
