Dr. Suwanakul is an economist and senior professor of economics in the department of accounting and finance at Alabama State University (ASU). Originally hired as an assistant professor in 1989, he worked his way up to associate professor in 1994 and full professor in 2004. He also had the opportunity to serve as the chairperson of the Research Scholars' for ACBSP in 1994-1995. Prior to his tenure at ASU, Dr. Suwanakul was a visiting assistant professor of economics at Mississippi State University during 1987.
Authoring and co-authoring multiple articles in his field as a result of his research, Dr. Suwanakul has been published in such journals as Public Finance Quarterly, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Regional Science and Urban Economics, and the Journal of Regional Science. Dr. Suwanakul is a member of the American Economic Association and the Southwestern Economics Society. He has also been a longtime community service committee member of Optimist International since 1993, member of Delta Mu Delta since 1995 and chapter faculty advisor of Gamma Epsilon since 1996.
First earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Chiang Mai University in Thailand in 1971, it was not until Dr. Suwanakul came to the United States that he switched careers from business to economics and academia. Arriving in the U.S. in 1972, he soon after completed a Master of Arts in Economics at Middle Tennessee State University in 1974, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics at the University of Arkansas in 1986. Shortly thereafter, he began his teaching career. Dr. Suwanakul is notably certified by the U.S. Business System at the University of Dallas.
Dr. Suwanakul has been inducted into several honor societies including Delta Mu Delta, Omicron Delta Epsilon and Gamma Theta Epsilon. The recipient of two Faculty Leadership in Research and Publications Awards from the College of Business at ASU in 2004 and 2005, Dr. Suwanakul was also promoted to the Personal Growth Involvement Level II by Optimist International in 1997. He was listed in the Research Scholar Directory by Harvard University in 1995 and has since been cited in the 26th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
