With more than 50 years of experience in nursing and education to her credit, Ms. Hightower has become an authority in her industry and currently serves as a nurse at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Holding this role since 1980, she began her career as the editor for the American Personnel and Guidance Association, now known as the American Council on Education, from 1968 to 1971. Excelling as the editor for the American Council on Education from 1971 to 1972, she was the managing editor of Hemisphere Publishing from 1972 to 1974 and a nurse at the Iowa City VA Medical Center from 1979 to 1980.
Prior to becoming an esteemed nursing educator, Ms. Hightower pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Iowa in 1979. She is certified in nephrology, venipuncture and wound-care. Over the years, Ms. Hightower was mentored by Dr. Elizabeth Swan, a doctor from the University of Iowa nursing program, and Irene Caldwell, a colleague who always encouraged her to do her best.
Alongside her professional responsibilities, Ms. Hightower remains informed of the changes and advancements in her industry through relevant organizations. She is a member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, the American Nephrology Nurses Association, the North Carolina Nurses Association, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the Chi Eta Pi Sorority. Outside of her career, she volunteered in her field and community as well. Ms. Hightower has volunteer with the Durham Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the National Kidney Foundation and at her local Democratic campaign center.
Notably, Ms. Hightower was the first African American to enroll at Elon University in North Carolina in 1963. While she did not complete her studies with the university, she was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in April 2019, for her perseverance in pursuing her education despite the obstacles she faced as well as the dedication she has shown to her patients and community. Being recognized with the honorary doctorate was a major highlight in her career. Ms. Hightower has also been featured in several editions of Who's Who of American Women.
