Principal of Thad Long Legal Services since 2011, Mr. Long is a sought-after attorney of more than 50 years, specializing in antitrust and high-stakes trials and in patent and trademark litigation and advice, including franchise law, with arbitration and mediation experience. For more than 40 years, he was a partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP (and its predecessors), Alabama's largest law firm, serving for some years as a member of its Executive Committee. He also served for years as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Alabama School of Law (teaching antitrust law) and also at Samford University's Cumberland School of Law (teaching patent law). For 25 years he has been an Elected Member of the prestigious American Law Institute and is a member of the Alabama Law Foundation, having also founded the Antitrust and Business Torts Section of the Alabama Bar Association. For more than 25 years Mr. Long has been listed in the peer-reviewed publication, Best Lawyers in America and his present listing includes nine different categories of legal fields in which he has achieved "Best Lawyers" recognition. One of his noteworthy jury trial victories was among 12 trials chosen to be featured in the National Law Journals annual listing of the most significant defense victories of the year. For many years he served on the Editorial Board of The Trademark Reporter (the official publication of the International Trademark Association), and he was the recipient of the Great Communicator Award bestowed by that international organization. He is admitted to practice in each of the three United States District Courts in Alabama, as well as in the Eleventh Circuit, Fifth Circuit, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He is a registered member of the U. S. Patent Bar. He has contributed a number of scholarly articles to Law Reviews, and has lectured at various seminars, for some of which he has prepared or been co-author of books relating to the subjects of those seminars. He was elected to serve a term as a trustee of the Birmingham Legal Aid Society and has headed the Birmingham Bar Association disciplinary committee in the past, as well as serving on or chairing committees or sections of the Alabama Bar Association.
For decades Mr. Long has also served as a community civic leader, having served as a Trustee of the Canterbury Methodist Foundation (founded by Mr. Long), the Oscar Wells Trust for the Birmingham Museum of Art, and others. He has served as President of the Birmingham-Jefferson Historical Society, the Birmingham Music Club (the oldest cultural organization in the city), the Greater Birmingham Arts Alliance, the University of Virginia Alumni Association of Birmingham, and Chair of the Columbia University Secondary Schools Committee for Alabama, as well as holding chief executive offices in the Alabama Society of the Revolution and the Alabama Society of Colonial Wars. He has received several awards from different organizations for his work on behalf of retarded children. Most recently, Mr. Long has contributed a collection of eight essays included in the 2017 book "Reflections" published by the Canterbury Methodist Foundation, and is working on his memoirs. He is listed in the Social Register, and is a member of the Yale Club, the Country Club of Birmingham and The Club.
Receiving a full tuition and room scholarship, Mr. Long attended and was graduated from Columbia University with a major in physics. He then received a full tuition and room scholarship from the University of Virginia School of Law. At Virginia, Mr. Long was regularly on the Dean's List, and was chosen for the Virginia Law Review Editorial Board where he rose to become the Comments & Projects Editor. He was awarded Order of the Coif recognition, was tapped for the leadership societies Omicron Delta Kappa and Raven Society, and was a class officer. He served as a Legal Method instructor while still in law school. Although his intention originally was to focus his legal career on the legal aspects of atomic energy, combining his law and physics backgrounds, he gravitated toward other areas of law as he became exposed to them in law school, especially antitrust law which involves the intersection of law and economics. After commencing his law practice in Birmingham, he met and married Carolyn Frances Wilson, a native of the area who had taken her undergraduate degree from Hollins College in Virginia (with a year of study at the University of Paris) and her master's degree from the University of Alabama. They had two children, Louisa Frances, herself a University of Virginia graduate (both college and law school), married to Norman M. Stockman, a lawyer with University of Virginia connections, and a son Wilson Alexander who died of a tragic accident. The Longs have four grandchildren, Kacie Grace Long, Anne Frances Stockman, Katherine Rose Stockman, and William Henry Stockman.
