Dr. Nazarian is an esteemed mathematics professor and academic administrator with more than 54 years of distinguished service. He initially pursued an education at Rhode Island College, earning a Bachelor of Education in 1954. Graduating with a Master of Arts at Brown University in 1956, Dr. Nazarian subsequently obtained a Master of Arts at the University of Illinois in 1961 before concluding his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy at New York University in 1967.
In 1954, Dr. Nazarian began his career as an instructor of mathematics at Rhode Island College, rising to the posts of an assistant professor in 1958, an associate professor in 1967, and a professor from 1971 to 2008. He additionally excelled at Rhode Island College as the associate dean of arts and sciences from 1970 to 1972, a special assistant to the President from 1971 to 1977, the vice president for administrative services in 1977, and vice president of administration and finance in 1981. In September of 1984 when the president passed away, Dr. Nazarian was named acting president and served until 1986. He was appointed president in 1990 and was granted emeritus status in 2008 at his retirement.
Dr. Nazarian further served as the chairman of the Arabic Educational Foundation of Pawtucket from 1966 to 1972 and the chairman of the Sargent Rehabilitation Center of Providence from 1983 to 1986. He has two awards named after him: The John Nazarian Alumni of the Year Award and The Dr. Nazarian and Dr. Penfield Lifetime Achievement Award. Likewise, Dr. Nazarian was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 2003 and in 2000, The John Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts was dedicated to him.
