A professor of biology at John Tyler Community College in Midlothian, VA, Dr. Smeltz has been a faculty member on campus since 2006. Hired as an adjunct professor, she worked her way up to assistant professor, associate professor and finally full professor in 2015. She formerly taught as an adjunct professor of biology at South University Online in Pittsburgh between 2005 and 2006 and was an assistant research professor of pharmacology at George Washington University Medical Center between 2000 and 2003.
Dr. Smeltz has authored and co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed papers while researching breast cancer cells and prostate cancer cells. She is also a longstanding member of the American Association for Cancer Research, as well as the Virginia Community Colleges Association, the Society for Science and the Public, and The Smithsonian Institute.
Interested in the sciences since she was young, Dr. Smeltz was involved in numerous international science fairs while she was in high school. She also earned the opportunity to work in a research laboratory at just 16 years old, where she performed tissue cultures and other scientific duties and worked in a clinic as a receptionist, where she experienced what it is like to work with patients. Much preferring the work she was doing with cells, she quickly realized that the research aspect was a better fit for her than medicine. When it was time for her to decide between medical or graduate school after earning her bachelor's degree, she ultimately chose graduate school.
Dr. Smeltz has been included in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America. She has notably held a Bachelor of Science from Baylor University since 1990 and Doctor of Philosophy from Texas A&M University since 1994. After earning her degrees, she spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology in Research Triangle Park, NC, between 1994 and 1996, followed by another three years as a postdoctoral research associate at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, DC, between 1996 and 1999 and one year as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, between 1999 and 2000.
