Having accrued over 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Hafkenschiel was the president of the California Association for Health Services at Home from 1986 to 2012. He served as Executive Director of the California Health Facilities Commission from 1980 to 1985. Previously, he worked for the California Department of Health Services in the positions of a chief of planning and program analysis and a senior health planning analyst from 1975 to 1980. He began his career as a research analyst for the U.S. Department of Labor in 1971. Additionally, Mr. Hafkenschiel has excelled in the position of a co-principal investigator of the Uniform Home Health Database and Patient Classification Project for the California Association for Health Services at Home between 1994 and 1998. Early in his career, he spearheaded the development of the occupational noise standard for the U.S Department of Labor and subsequently established himself as an occupational safety and health expert.
Prior to embarking on his career path, Mr. Hafkenschiel pursued an education at Swarthmore College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1968. He completed additional coursework at the University of California Berkeley, from which he graduated with a Master of Business Administration in 1970. In 1991, Mr. Hafkenschiel became a certified association executive.
Outside of his career accomplishments, Mr. Hafkenschiel is a member of several professional organizations. He contributes his time and skill to the American Public Health Association, the American Society of Association Executives, and the National Association for Home Care. He is an active part of the California Society of Association Executives, for which he was the chair of the board from 2001 to 2002. Notably, Mr. Hafkenschiel was recognized with the Lois C. Lillick Award for outstanding contributions to home care by the California Association for Health Services at Home in 2012.
