Dr. Volz is a medical science educator with more than 60 years of service to his field. He attended Heidelberg College, intending to become a minister, but was encouraged by his mentor, professor A.G. McQuate, to pursue science instead. He graduated from Heidelberg College in 1958 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in business administration and botany, and continued his education at Michigan State University, from which he obtained a Master of Science in botany and plant pathology in 1962 and a doctorate in mycology in 1966. He pursued postgraduate coursework at the University of Houston from 1970 to 1972. Dr. Volz earned a Doctor of Philosophy in business administration at Century University in 1991.
Between 1962 and 1963, Dr. Volz was an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, before completing a postdoctoral internship at the Indiana University Medical Center from 1966 until 1968. He served as an assistant professor at Purdue University from 1968 to 1969, becoming a senior postdoctoral fellow in biospace technology at NASA between 1969 and 1971. Dr. Volz began his career with Eastern Michigan University in 1969 as an associate professor, rising to the position of a professor in 1971 and a director of the mycology laboratory in 1976, for which he continues to serve.
In light of his outstanding innovation and service in the field, Dr. Volz has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1990 Kholodny medal from the Ukrainian Institute of Botanical and Soviet Academy Science, and fellowships from the National Science Foundation in 1962, NASA in 1967 and 1972, and NATO from 1982 until 1989. He is a frequent contributor to professional journals, and has been a visiting lecturer at institutions throughout the world. Dr. Volz is a member of the International Society of Human and Animal Mycology, and the Mycological Society of America.
