Dr. Metres is a clinical psychologist with many years of exemplary results in his chosen discipline. Prior to embarking on his professional path, he attended the College of the Holy Cross, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1964. He subsequently served in the United States Navy (1964-1969), before continuing his academic efforts at U.S. International University. He received a Master of Arts in Social Psychology in 1971 and a Ph.D. in Professional Psychology in 1975.
Dr. Metres furthered his military career from 1969-1991, advancing to rank of Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve. From 1971 to 1973 he taught psychology at the San Diego Evening College. In 1971 Dr. Metres accepted a post as a personnel research psychologist at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego conducting family studies in the adjustment of POW's and MIA's.
From 1978 to 1980 he served as a clinical psychologist at the Old Orchard Hospital in Skokie IL. Since 1978 he has served as a clinical psychologist at the North Shore Center for Counseling & Therapy in Northbrook IL.
Dr. Metres has recently enjoyed his work as a NAMI supported group psychotherapist for military veterans of the Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. He has also been a national speaker & presenter on PTSD and combat stress and therapeutic interventions for veterans and their families.
Dr. Metres was the co-editor of Family Separation & Reunion: Adjustment of Families of POW's and MIA's (1975) and is a contributor to professional journals. He is the recipient of numerous military honors including the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and a RVN Staff Service Honor Medal. He is a life member of the American Psychological Association, the Retired Officers Association and the Association of the U.S. Navy.
