With greater than three decades of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Nolan excelled as an obstetrician-gynecologist and an educator. Prior to embarking on his professional journey, he pursued a formal education at Drake University, for which he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the biological sciences in 1957. Five years later he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine Degree from Howard University. He concluded his formal education with a Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan in 1970.
Dr. Nolan began and completed his medical training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Medical School in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1966. He served as Acting Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the same institution from 1966 to 1967. He entered the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corp. in 1967 as a Lt. Commander and the Deputy Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was promoted to the rank of Commander in 1968 and completed his service in 1969. He was awarded a United States Public Health Fellowship in 1969, attended the University of Michigan of Michigan School of Public Health and was awarded a Master of Public Health degree in 1969. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan as an Assistant Professor in the Medical School Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the School of Public Health Departments of Maternal Child Health and Population Planning in 1970. He was awarded a three-year Josiah Macy, Jr. Faculty Development Fellowship by the Josiah Macy. Jr. Foundation of New York, NY in 1973, and a two-month Fellowship to study Maternal Child Nutrition, in Montreal Quebec, Canada by the National foundation March of Dimes in 1978 while at Michigan. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor at Michigan in 1976. Dr. Nolan left the University of Michigan in 1980 when he was appointed Professor and Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Dr. Nolan took a leave of absence from Howard University and assumed the positions of Chief of Obstetrics and Division Head of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Henry Ford Health System in 1988. He served as Acting Chairman in Obstetrics and Gynecology 1995-1996 at Henry Ford Health System where he concluded his medical career in the year 2000.
Other achievements by Dr. Nolan include Diplomat Status with the National Board of Medical Examiners, Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Board Certification in Maternal Fetal Medicine. He has been a specialty examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Residency Reviewer for the American Medical Association and served on the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine for three years.
