Dr. Claudio Grossman has been recognized as the Washington College of Law's Emeritus Dean for his contributions to the law school

After working for the University of Chile in Santiago, Chile, the University of Utrecht Law School and Twente University of Technology in The Netherlands, Dr. Grossman relocated to the United States to pursue a career in law. In 1983, he accepted the position of the director of the International Legal Studies Program at American University's Washington College of Law. From 1995 until 2016, he served as Dean, making him one of the longest-serving deans of a law school in the nation.
Dr. Grossman has been recognized as the Washington College of Law's Emeritus Dean for his contributions to the law school and continues to be a Professor of Law and the Raymond Geraldson Scholar for International and Humanitarian Law. Additionally, he has excelled as a member of the United Nations International Law Commission (2016 to 2021) and as Chair of its Drafting Committee in 2019. Dr. Grossman's contributions to international law and human rights were also recognized through his election to the UN's Committee Against Torture in 2003, where he served as Chair (2008-2015), Vice-Chair (2003-2008), and as Chair of the Human Rights Treaty Bodies (2013), President of the Inter¬American Commission of Human Rights (1995, 2001), and in different capacities as member of the Commission (1994¬2001). Dr. Grossman also served as a Mission Participant on behalf of the Inter-American Institute, Organization of American States, and the International Human Rights Law Group, to observe elections and promote human rights in Romania, Nepal, Chile, Nicaragua, Suriname, and the Middle East. He was President of the College of the Americas, an Association of Universities in the Western Hemisphere, and a member the Commission to Control Interpol's Files (2005¬2011). He has served at the American Law Institute since 2010, and currently serves on the Board of the Open Society Foundation, and the Justice Initiative and Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights.
Dr. Grossman has extensive litigation experience participating in seminal cases before the Inter-American and Universal Human Rights Systems, including Aloeboetoe et al v. Suriname, Awas Tingi v. Nicaragua, and Manfredo Angel Velázquez-Rodriguez v. Honduras. Between 2016-2018, he represented Chile as Agent in the Obligation to Negotiate Access to the Pacific Ocean (Bolivia v Chile) before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), as Co-Agent between 2013¬2016, and as Counsel between 2009-2013 in the maritime dispute Peru v. Chile.
Prior to coming to the United States, Dr. Grossman earned a JD from the University of Chile in 1971 and a Doctor of Juridical Science in law from the University of Amsterdam in 1980. He maintains his professional alignment with the American Bar Foundation, the American Bar Association, the Association of American Law Schools, the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Bar Association. Moreover, Dr. Grossman has also dedicated his time to working pro-bono cases for human rights violations.
Dr. Grossman has been celebrated on several occasions for his efforts in law with a number of honorary degrees through the University of Fairleigh Dickinson, the University of Valparaiso (Chile) and the University San Martin de Portes (Peru). In 2012, he accepted Lifetime Leadership Awards from the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association and the Hispanic National Bar Foundation. In addition, he was presented with the Deborah L. Rhodes Award from the AALS Section on Pro Bono and Public Services Opportunities, the Henry W. Edgerton Civil Liberties Award from the American Civil Liberties Union, the Simon Bolivar Award from the Western Institute for Security Cooperation and the Outstanding Dean of the Year Award from the National Association for Public Interest Law.
