An internist and an educator, Dr. Rowe spent 34 years in private practice where he specialized in internal medicine. He also served as the chief of the advisory committee for cardiac rehabilitation with the Northwest Ohio Heart Association in Toledo, Ohio, and the chairman of the department of medicine at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. Additionally, Dr. Rowe was instrumental in academia, serving as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Toledo in the college of medicine and life sciences for more than three decades between 1962 and 1993.
While in private practice, Dr. Rowe wrote voluminously on his area of expertise. He notably published that extraordinary unremitting endurance exercise can injure a perfectly normal heart in LANCET. His research was based on his studies of Sy Mah, the holder of The Guinness Book of Records for having completed 524 marathons. This triggered a 25-year pursuit regarding the cardiovascular complications of space flight, beginning with a hypothesis pertaining to potential permanent injury to a normal heart from interplanetary travel.
Dr. Rowe has since researched and written regarding the inhalation of moon dust in the lunar module, and how it can cause severe hypertension. Four Apollo mission astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, returned from their landings displaying abnormalities in their cardiac function. Further, he was the first to publish that adrenaline levels are elevated in space. His articles have been published in multiple different scholarly journals, including the Journal of Heart Disease, Spaceflight and the International Journal Impact Research. One of Dr. Rowe's articles was likewise featured by Global Medical Discovery in the top 20 of 20,000 peer-reviewed science and medical publications.
Between 1988 and 2012, Dr. Rowe has conducted scientific meetings across the U.S. and in such countries as China, France, Greece, Canada, and Austria. He has covered many topics, including Life Expectancy Studies in Space, The Advantages of An All-Female Crew for a Mars Mission, and Fitness Role Models. Moreover, Dr. Rowe served as a delegate of the citizen ambassador program with the People-to-People International to China during 1988.
Dr. Rowe received a Bachelor of Science at the University of Cincinnati in 1950 and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1954. He subsequently served two years in the U.S. Air Force between 1955 and 1957. Following his tour in the military, Dr. Rowe completed his internship at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver and residency at the University of Iowa. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Rowe is a member of the American College of Nutrition and an elected fellow of multiple other organizations, including the British Interplanetary Society, the American Medical Association, and the National Space Society. He is also a council member of the American College of Nutrition.
