Dr. Harris is a computer scientist and an educator with more than 45 years of distinction in information systems and information security. The child of a teacher and an aerospace engineer, he was inspired to follow in both his parents' footsteps, and attended Kansas University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. Dr. Harris continued his education with a Master of Arts from the College of William and Mary in 1967 before completing a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Virginia in 1970.
From 1964 to 1971, Dr. Harris was a numerical analyst and computer programmer for NASA, based in Hampton, Virginia. During this time, he began his teaching career as a part-time instructor at George Washington University and the University of Virginia Extension. Realizing his talents as an educator, Dr. Harris found success as an associate professor at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, from 1971 until 1979. In 1979, he accepted a position as Associate Professor of Computer Science and Information Systems at Pittsburg State University. He was promoted to Professor in 1984 and was given the rank of University Professor in 2001. From 1991-1999 he served as co-director of the successful business accreditation program at Pittsburg State University. He was awarded the rank of University Professor Emeritus in 2012.
Dr. Harris holds numerous professional certifications and continuing education credits, including CISA (certified information systems auditor) and CISSP (certified information systems security professional). He is passionate about charitable work, and served as a board moderator, a treasurer, and a volunteer at the First Christian Church of Pittsburg, as well as being active in the Kiwanis Club. Dr. Harris is a member of the Computer Security Institute and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association and he has served on several NSF review panels charged with reviewing grant requests related to information assurance and computer security related programs.
