Dr. Morrisett's professional career began as an instructor at the University of California in 1956. After that he worked at the Social Science Research Council for a year before joining the staff of the Carnegie Corporation of New York where he remained for ten years. He was in the progressively responsible positions of executive assistant, executive associate, assistant to the president and vice president of both Carnegie Corporation and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He was president of the Markle Foundation from 1969 to 1998.
He is co-founder of Sesame Workshop, formerly Children's Television Workshop. Dr. Morrisett continues as a trustee with the title of Chairman Emeritus. Alongside co-founder Joan Ganz Cooney, he is responsible for one of the most distinguished, highly favored children's media companies in the business. Most notably, Sesame Workshop was presented with two one hundred million dollar awards from the McArthur Foundation and the Lego Foundation. for work with refugee children.
Additionally, he has contributed as a trustee to the Systems Development Corporation, the RAND Corporation, the Riverside Research Institute, Public Agenda, and as a director of Infonautics Corporation and then Tucows.
Prior to embarking on his career journey, Dr. Morrisett pursued an education at Oberlin College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. He completed postgraduate coursework at the University of California from 1951 to 1953 before ultimately graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University. Subsequently, he has received honorary degrees from Oberlin College, Northwestern University, and the Frederick S. Pardee RAND Graduate School.
Furthermore, Dr. Morrisett was honored as a fellow of the National Science Foundation in 1953. His paper, "The Origins of Sesame Street," describes the history of his desire to help children in their early education. The aforementioned paper is mentioned in Lee Mitang's book, "Big Bird and Beyond: The New Media and the Markle Foundation," in which Dr. Morrisett's impressive career is featured.
