Having served as technical director, senior director, and managing director at Etch Products Group of Lam Research Corporation since 2002, respectively, Dr. Shih is currently a Lam Fellow of Etch Products Group. He authored and co-authored 1,000 technical reports and created 500 semiconductor specifications and BKMs (best known methods) at Lam Research Corporation. He is one of leading scientists and engineers on semiconductor chamber materials, precision wet cleaning technology, productivity enhancement through defect and micro-contamination reduction. He has done the pioneer work and opened a new scientific and engineering field in the revolutionary semiconductor chamber materials study under high density plasma conditions, and in the new field of precision wet cleaning technology and its applications. All the advanced development and efforts become the enabling technologies to make the semiconductor IC feature size shrinkage up to 10nm, 7nm, 5nm or even 3nm possible.
Dr. Shih is a renowned electrochemist and materials researcher with over 50 years of experience to his credit. Prior to assuming his current position, he contributed over eight years as technical director on Metal Etch at Applied Materials. Between 1994 and 1998, he served as senior process engineer and member of technical staff at Applied Materials. He became a technical director at Applied Materials in 1999. He made major contributions in the development and worldwide customer technical support for Metal Etch tools, visited worldwide customer sites, successfully solved all the technical issues and received high reputations and trust at worldwide customers. He authored and co-authored 400 technical reports and created about 40 semiconductor specifications at Applied Materials. He is the first technologist to set up the systematic study of anodized aluminum for semiconductor IC equipment industry and created the first anodized aluminum systematic specification for semiconductor IC industry.
Other positions he has affiliated with including FMC Corporation Technology Center in San Jose, GM Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan. Dr. Shih provided his expertise as a consultant for Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc., Schlumberger Technology, Inc., BASF Corporation, Chevron Technology Company, Electric Power Institute, Applied Materials, and Universities. He finished over 140 confidential technical reports.
Dr. Shih received Doctor of Philosophy in Metallurgy from the Department of Materials Sciences & Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University in 1986. He also holds Bachelor of Science from Peking University in chemistry in 1970 and Master of Engineering in electrochemistry at Academic Sinica of Electric Power Institute in 1981. He was a post doctor fellow at University of Southern California (USC) from 1986 to 1988 and served as a research assistant professor from 1988 to 1990 at USC. Dr. Shih authored and co-authored 120 publications in referred journals, books, and proceedings. He also had 100 national and international presentations. Dr. Shih has a wide range of research interests and his areas of expertise include semiconductor chamber materials, defect reduction and productivity enhancement, chamber components precision wet cleaning and reconditioning, corrosion science & technology, corrosion on-line monitoring and control, coatings and surface modification, electrochemical transient techniques, mathematical modeling and software development in corrosion and related fields, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and aluminum hard anodization and its characterization. His computer software on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ANALEIS) and polarization curve (POLFIT) analysis is still one of the useful software used in the world.

Dr. Shih was 1st place winner of graduate student poster competition held by National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) at New Orleans in 1984; board member of Readers Conference on Electroplating at The Pennsylvania State University in 1985; the recipient of Wesley W. Horner Award winner of American Civil Engineering Association in 1993; the recipient of 2004 McFarland Award at The Pennsylvania State University; Fellow of Etch Products Group, Lam Research Corporation on October 1, 2014; the recipient of the recognition of outstanding technical achievement at Lam Research Corporation ET conference, 2017.
