After accruing more than 40 years of professional excellence in the finance and healthcare industries, Mr. Whitman retired in 2006 from his role as president of Whitman Garvey Inc., but continued to serve in a consulting capacity on a part-time basis between 2006 and 2011. Additionally, he served part-time with Whitman Consulting LLC between 2011 and 2014. At the inception of this career, he gained valuable expertise in accounting and auditing through Arthur Young & Company as a certified public accountant. Over the years, he also worked for Blue Cross of Oregon as an administrative assistant, Sacred Heart General Hospital as director of finance, the Sisters of St Joseph of Peace Health and Hospital Services as vice president of finance and vice president of corporate affairs. In addition, he served as the first full-time president of Healthcare Financial Management Association, a nation-wide association of healthcare financial officers.
Mr. Whitman is a fellow and lifetime member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He also holds life membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Lewis and Clark College, graduating cum laude, and has remained abreast of changes in the field through continuing education and his affiliations with professional organizations. His public service included appointments to the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council, the Government Accounting Standards Advisory Council and the Case Western Reserve Health Management Center Advisory Council. After retiring, he has continued to serve on the governing boards of Cannon Beach Conference Center and various other nonprofit organizations. He also teaches Bible studies and contributes his time to his community through his local church.
His family has been a true blessing to him throughout his life. His wife, Anne – a beautiful, charming and engaging woman with a vibrant personality, was loved by everyone she knew. Although she recently passed away, she will forever be the light of his life. Their three children, Steve, Beth and Daniel, and his six grandchildren, continue to be his delight.
In light of his excellence in the field, Mr. Whitman was honored with features in the 42nd edition of Who's Who in America, the 23rd and 24th editions of Who's Who in the West and the 24th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry. He is also a recipient of HFMA's Frederick C. Morgan individual achievement award for distinguished service to the healthcare industry and financial management.
