Throughout his career path he has found success as a research scientist from 1968 to 1974, a senior research scientist between 1974 and 1978, a senior associate of public affairs from 1980 until 1981, a manager of public affairs from 1981 to 1982, and the director of science policy affairs from 1983 until 1991. Likewise, Dr. Althuis was active as a member of the professional staff Science and Technology Committee at the United States House of Representatives from 1978 to 1979. He retired in 2001 after nine years as the director of science policy at Pfizer Inc.

Prior to becoming an esteemed scientist, Dr. Althuis pursued a formal education at Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in 1963 and a Master of Arts in chemistry in 1965. He completed a Dow Summer Fellowship in 1967 and a National Institute of Health Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in 1967. Likewise, Dr. Althuis earned a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry from Michigan State University in 1968. He co-authored "Drugs Affecting the Respiratory System" in 1980, and "Orphan Drugs" in 1982.

A civic-minded professional, Dr. Althuis was active as the president of the board of directors of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra from 1976 to 1978, an elected counselor of the Groton Town Council from 1971 to 1975, a member of the Groton Republican Town Committee from 1973 to 1978, and the program advisor of the Foundation for Biomedical Research from 1985 to 1995. Likewise, Dr. Althuis is currently the president of the Groton Bank Historical Association.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Althuis remains informed of the changes and advancements in his industry through relevant organizations. He excelled as a member of the board of directors of Americans for Medical Progress from 1997 to 2004, the Safety & Research Alliance of New York State from 1993 to 1996, and the Connecticut United Research Excellence from 1993 to 1998. Likewise, Dr. Althuis sat on the committee on chemical and public affairs at the American Chemical Society from 1984 to 1990, and served as a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the New York Academy of Sciences. He is the proud father of three children and has five grandchildren. In his free time, Dr. Althuis enjoys sailing and studying local history.
