With 50 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Hercules has been recognized as a Centennial Professor emeritus of Vanderbilt University since 2007, having been a Centennial Professor with the school since 1995 and a department chair from 1995 to 2003. Prior to these roles, he worked as professor of chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh from 1976 to 1994, serving as department chair from 1980 to 1989. In 1990 he was named Miles professor, a position he held until he moved to Vanderbilt University. Dr. Hercules had previously worked at the University of Georgia, first as associate professor from 1969 to 1974 and then as professor from 1974 to 1976.
From 1968 to 1969, Dr. Hercules held the post of an associate professor with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he had excelled as an assistant professor from 1963 to 1968. He began his professional career at Lehigh University as an assistant professor from 1957 to1960, when he moved to Juniata College, his alma mater, as associate professor until accepting the position at MIT in 1968.
His undergraduate education was at Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA, where he received his bachelor's degree, and he received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Hercules was a charter member of the International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemists (IAEAC), an institution quartered in Basel, Switzerland. The purpose was to coordinate efforts of North American and European groups interested in environmental analysis by having meetings on different sides of the Atlantic in alternate years. He served as a member of the Executive Committee and as the North American representative for more than a decade.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Hercules has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, and the American Vacuum Society. Dr. Hercules has also been active with the Photoelectric Spectrometry Group, the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences, the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh, the Society of Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society. While in Pittsburgh Dr. Hercules was an active member of the Conference Committee of the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, a major international chemistry conference.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hercules has been celebrated for his contributions to the field of analytical chemistry. He received the Benedetti-Pichler Award from the American Microchemistry Society, the Achievement in Analytical Chemistry Award from the Eastern Analytical Symposium, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Prize. He was recognized by Juniata College as a Distinguished Alumnus. While at the University of Pittsburgh, he was presented with the President's Distinguished Research Award and at Vanderbilt University, he was awarded the Earl Sutherland Prize for achievement in research. During his time at the University of Georgia he was named a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow. The Spectroscopy for Applied Spectroscopy awarded him the Lester W. Strock Medal and also named him an SAS Fellow. He has also received two prestigious awards from the American Chemical Society: the Fisher Award in Analytical Chemistry and the Adamson Award in Surface Chemistry. Dr. Hercules has been featured in numerous publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Dr. Hercules' primary research area has been the application of new spectroscopic methods to analytical chemistry. He was among the first people to develop fluorescence spectroscopy for trace analysis of organic compounds. This led him to do basic research in chemiluminescence; he discovered electro-generated chemiluminescence (ECL). He was among the first chemists to recognize the importance of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as an analytical technique. In collaboration with Prof. K. Siegbahn (Uppsala, Sweden) he generated an extensive program in surface analysis, particularly applied to the study of heterogeneous catalysts. His interest in surface analysis was expanded by developing a collaboration with Prof. A. Benninghoven (Münster, Germany) in the use of secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) for surface analysis of synthetic polymers. He was the first to show that SIMS could identify small differences between similar polymers. This grew into his current area of research, which is the application of mass spectrometry and ion mobility spectrometry to the detailed characterization of block copolymers.
To date Dr. Hercules has published nearly 600 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals.
