Dr. Richard H. Dean notes his biggest achievement as creating and leading the initial five years of the development of the Research Park in downtown Winston-Salem for Wake Forest University.

With more than three decades of professional excellence to his credit, Dr. Dean has flourished as a surgeon and an educator. At the beginning of his career, he worked with Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, where held the posts of a surgical intern, a surgical assistant resident, and the chief surgical resident, between 1969 and 1974. After completing a vascular research fellowship and served as an instructor of surgery at Northwestern University Hospital for a year, Dr. Dean accepted a post at the Vanderbilt University Hospital as an assistant professor of surgery in 1975. From 1977 to 1986, he excelled in the roles of an associate professor, the head of the division of vascular surgery, and a full professor of surgery with the renowned university. Soon thereafter, he found success as the Richard T. Meyers professor and the chairman of surgery at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1987.
As he advanced with the university, Dr. Dean contributed as the director of the division of surgical sciences, the chairman for the department of general surgery for the Bowman Gray School of Medicine and the senior vice president of health affairs between 1989 and 2007. During this time, he also was active as the director of the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and the president of health science with the aforementioned institution from 1997 to 2007. Aside from his primary endeavors, Dr. Dean was a visiting professor numerous domestic and international universities including the University of Vienna, Austria, the University of South Wales, Sydney, Duke University, and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
The highlight of Dr. Dean's career was receiving several awards, for which he was very proud. In particular, he was gratified to be presented with an honorary doctorate degree he received the University of Vienna, Austria. Because of his history with medicine and having a strong connection to Vienna, Dr. Dean was selected to be the operating surgeon in Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in New Zealand. A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, Dr. Dean earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. Four years later, he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 1986. Furthermore, he became a board member of the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of General Vascular Surgery, and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. To remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Dean maintained his affiliation with a number of professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, the American Medical Association, the Southern Surgical Association, and the International Society of Surgery, among others.
