Dr. Brockett is a professor of adult education at the University of Tennessee College of Education, Health and Human Sciences in the department of educational psychology and counseling. A tenured educator on campus since 1990, throughout the years he has been instrumental in the success of nearly 50 doctoral students and 100 masters advisees. Dr. Brockett also taught at Montana State University, Bozeman, and Syracuse University and was a program development coordinator for the End Stage Renal Disease Network 26 in East Syracuse, New York.
During his illustrious career, Dr. Brockett has focused his research on self-directed learning, adult learning and development, as well as ethics in adult education and adult education as a field of study and practice. He has written extensively as a result, contributing articles to various scholarly journals, serving on the editorial board for Adult Education Quarterly and the International Journal of Self-Directed Learning and as editor-in-chief of New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Dr. Brockett has also edited/co-edited several books, including "The Profession and Practice of Adult Education" in 1997, which received a Houle Award for Outstanding Literature in Adult Education. In 2015, he authored "Teaching Adults: A Practical Guide for New Teachers," a highly practical guide for new instructors teaching in any type of setting.
An alumnus of the University of Toledo, Dr. Brockett received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1976 and a Master of Education in guidance and counseling in 1977. He later acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in adult education from Syracuse University in 1982. He has been certified in gerontology since 1982.
Dr. Brockett has remained a figure in his professional community through memberships with prominent industry organizations. Serving in several roles with the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education (AACE), the Commission of Professors of Adult Education and the East Tennessee chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
In 2014, Dr. Brockett was awarded a President's Appreciation Award from the AAACE. Named to the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame in 2005, he also received a 2004 Malcolm Knowles Memorial Self-Directed Learning Award and was a 1997 co-winner of The Cyril Pool Award for Literature in Adult Education. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
