Dr. Kase began his professional journey in radiation physics by earning a Bachelor of Science in physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1961. Upon graduation, he was offered a job in Northern California that allowed him to continue graduate coursework. He completed a Master of Science in bioradiology at the University of California Berkeley in 1963. Dr. Kase would conclude his education in 1975 with a Doctor of Philosophy in biophysics from Stanford University.
From 1963 to 1969, Dr. Kase found success as a health physicist at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Livermore, California, holding the same role at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center from 1969 until 1973. He subsequently maintained the role of a research associate at Stanford University Medical School between 1973 and 1975, before joining the clinical faculty of Harvard Medical School as an assistant professor of radiation oncology from 1975 to 1982, after which he advanced to the position of associate professor from 1982 until 1985. From 1985 until 1992 he held the position of professor of radiation oncology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He returned to the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center from 1992 to 1995, serving as the head of the radiation physics department, becoming the director of the environment, safety and health division from 1995 until 2001, and associating as a departmental associate between 2001 and 2005. Dr. Kase continued his career as a safety officer for Lyncean Technologies, Inc. from 2002 to 2009, and eventually retired in 2018.
Dr. Kase is certified by the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Health Physics. He has served in leadership roles in numerous professional organizations, including as the senior vice president of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements from 2002 to 2011, the president of the International Radiation Protection Association from 2008 until 2012, and the president of the Health Physics Society between 2003 and 2004. Dr. Kase is the recipient of numerous awards for his contributions to the field, including the Warren Sinclair Medal in 2015, the Edith H. Quimby Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008, and the Elda E. Anderson Award in 1978. He is extensively published, having contributed to book chapters and professional journals, and is co-author of "Concepts in Radiation Dosimetry."
